Churchill Classic Car Show

On Sunday we had family outing to a local event, held every two years, the Churchill Classic Car Show, also meeting Piers and his friend, Andy. This has grown over the past ten years, or so, from a small gathering to quite a large event, with 400 cars on show, together with craft tents and flower show in the church to keep the wives happy. The whole event has something of a garden party atmosphere and has become something of a social event for North Cotswold folk. At the 2008 event, under a hot sun, picnics were enjoyed and the beer tent was drunk dry, so expectations were set high for an enjoyable afternoon this year. Rightly so, it turned out. The sun shone, although not quite so brightly and there was a fine display of cars to see. Unfortunately the popularity of the event meant that photography was difficult, so please ignore the random general public in the shots.

AC

16/70. Produced between 1936 and 1939, with a 2-litre straight six OHC engine.

Armstrong Siddeley were hot off the blocks after WW2, launching the all new Hurricane model in 1945, while other manufacturers were struggling to offer rehashed pre-war designs. Initially launched with a 2-litre straight six, later models, like the one above, had a 2.3 litre engine. Many were sold with a pre-select gearbox, with a conventional manual also available.

Aston Martin

DB4 Series V. One of the last made.

This has coachwork which I had not seen before. I don’t know the coachbuilder, but it has hints of James Young about it. Finished in Royal Garnet, it was absolutely stunning.

This is identical to one which I owned many years ago, even down the rare factory options of Webasto sunroof and rear headreasts.

Excellent, thanks for that James. If only we had had your knowledge at the Highnam event I would of made so many mistakes in the report!

Hangs head in shame.

Great stuff James, thanks. Thank goodness you were there with your encyclopedic knowledge of all things classic!

I must say it was a lovely event in a beautiful setting. Nice to see you and the family there - young William was a great deal more grown-up than I had for some reason expected but then I guess he must be three by now?

He will be three in July, but does seem very grown up for his age. His car knowledge is growing daily and he often comes out with the phrase: "Daddy, I like cars."

Splendid. I would have needed some specialist help with to identify a few of those cars.

Let me guess - Piers' favourite was the Esprit?

Lots of nice cars on show, from which I think I would pick the TA Alvis, though the MG Magnette is rather nice, too. and that Nuova 500 is the ultimate desirable cute city car! and not forgetting the 105 series Alfa GTV....

Clearly your Mastermind specialist area, very knowledgable write-up. Loads of lovely cars there.

The Esprit didn't meet entirely with my approval as it wasn't a perfect example. It was in very good nick but had a few non-original features and badging.
