2009 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec 5dr (GB) |

Doyen of many a rental fleet, the Ford Focus is a familiar car to most people. The Mark 2 model has been on sale for just over 5 years now, and during that time, has occasioned more than a few reviews on this site, so I did wonder whether it was appropriate to provide a full Road Test, on completion of yet another Focus rental. Two things swayed me to do so: although there were a number of reports written (indeed the very first ever test published on this site in 2007 was of a Focus), none survived the move to a new server last summer, and so there are currently no tests published on the site, and - surprising as it may seem - with the exception of a 25 mile rental some eighteen months ago, this is actually the first time I have driven the facelifted model that appeared in early 2008.

Autosport and Pistonheads Show - Jan 2010 |

The Racing Car show, as it used to be called, has long been not only the first significant event of any New Year, but has long attracted a mixture of exhibitors from the grass roots of UK motor sport along with a sub-set of manufacturers. Now called the AutoSport show, in deference to its sponsor, and combined with a display by Pistonheads it is an event I have attended a couple of times in the past and enjoyed. This year, Forum attendance was right down, and considering that the cheapest entry ticket cost £29 plus booking fee, or £31 on the door, it is hardly surprising. For those who dug deep into their pockets, this is what there was to see.

For many years, the BMW tower has been a landmark building, located on the Petuelring in Munich, close by the site of the 1972 Olympics. In recent years, BMW has recognised the power of its brand image in the market, and has added buildings to their site which welcome the visitor, enthusiast and purchaser. The BMW museum is the longest established of these, but was closed some years ago, for a complete rethink. The newly redesigned museum opened to the public this past weekend, and I was lucky enough to have timed my first ever visit to Munich for the very same weekend.

Alfa Museo Storico - Arese (I) |

There's been an Alfa Museum for over 30 years now. But few people have heard of it, and even fewer have probably visited it. Unlike the expensive creations by Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW, the Museo Storico Alfa is located inside the historic Arese site. Until recently, you could not just turn up and expect to visit. You had to request a visit, and state a reason why. "I'm an Alfisti" was considered an acceptable reason, by the way. With the factory days of Arese behind us, the museum is now open from 9 - 12:30 and 2 - 5pm on working days, except in August when it is closed. Having now visited, I can see why. I was quite worried that the directions seemed a bit vague, but actually, it is easy enough to find, just a few hundred metres off the Arese exit of the A8 autostrada, north of Milano. Follow signs to Arese Nord & Sud, and you see a huge sign marking the museum. Head down this road, and you are greeted with a security booth and a barrier. In a mixture of broken English from the security guard and my marginal Italian, he told me to park up, took some details, signed me in, and gave me a visitors badge. He told me to walk through the gates and then take the left hand path, and follow round until I would come to the museum. The building itself does not look promising!

Volo Auto Museum - Volo, IL (USA) |

Another weekend, and another car museum. Yes, believe it or not, I managed to find another one in my vicinity. This time it is the Volo Auto Museum, in a very small little town called Volo, about 40 miles north west of Chicago, and only about 15 miles north of Schaumburg, Illinois, which is my current work location. It came to prominence a couple of years ago, as Volvo Cars tried to stop them from using the name, claiming that people would get confused, but the case died down pretty quickly. Although I have been to Schaumburg many times over the past few years, I'd never been to this musuem before, and am now regretting this fact more than somewhat, for I found a veritable treasure trove of displays.
